As I made it through the day I realized I didn’t listen to any music today. You must understand I usually run and exercise and listen to my ipod daily. I didn’t today until I got in the car to drive to work. It was then that the emotions of the day got to me.
I thought about those effected by the shootings here in Aurora. Today hurt my heart.
I realized then that whether you believe in God, Buddha, pray to Mecca or anything else.
The one thing we all believe in is love. It’s the one thing we all can always use more of. It’s the one thing we all have to give. From a kind word to a stranger to a smile when we pass a co-worker in the hall, to a kind word when we see a friend who is down. Big or small, we have so much of it and yet it seems to be the thing we all want and need the most.
I was raised in a Christian home and though I don’t always agree with the actions of people who claim Christianity as their faith I do believe in the basic idea of God. I feel that the interpretation of him has been left up to us to decide. My perception is that he looks at tragedy and cries. He gives strength to those who are brave to be heroic. He wishes we would stop fighting over politics and see that we are making everything so complicated that we are missing the point.
My vision of God is one who gives the love that we need. His only desire is we give others the love we have been given. That’s it. Maybe it’s close to what could be considered life’s meaning? I know I wasn’t born to argue with someone over interpretation of scriptures or debate politics with hate filled rhetoric.
I just feel we need to be better to each other. Instead of holding others to our ideals we should accept people for who they are. That includes sexual proclivity and even political and religious beliefs. If I remember correctly from what I learned in Sunday School God accepts us all for who we are and forgives all sin no matter what it is.
If anything can be learned from this horrible tragedy, let it be that we can start to be better to each other everyday. Little by little let’s improve how we treat each other. The reaction could be big. This is not something that will change overnight but with time I believe the kinder we are, the more love we can show, the better we all will be.
Let’s try. What do we have to lose at this point?
